Ingredients
- 1 bag (82 g) Orville Redenbacher Buttery Microwavable Popcorn
- 1 cup (250 mL) sugar
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) maple syrup
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) corn syrup
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp (15 mL) lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt
- 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp (2 mL) baking soda
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) red Maple Leaf candy sprinkles
Directions
-
Step one
Prepare popcorn according to package instructions. Transfer to large bowl; set aside.
-
Step two
Combine sugar, maple syrup, corn syrup, butter, lemon juice, 2 tbsp (30 mL) water and salt in heavy-bottom saucepan set over medium heat; bring to boil, stirring to combine.
-
Step three
Boil for 8 to 10 minutes or until caramel reaches 245 °F/118 °C on candy thermometer, or firm ball stage (when a drop of caramel added to a small dish of cold water forms a pliable ball of caramel). Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla and baking soda. Working quickly, pour over popcorn, tossing evenly to coat. Let cool slightly. Toss in sprinkles.
-
Step four
Using buttered or wet hands, shape into twelve 2-inch (5 cm) balls. Place on parchment paper–lined tray. Insert red-and-white striped paper straw or lollipop stick into centre of each ball. Let cool completely.
Tips
For homemade gifts, wrap each popcorn pop in cellophane and tie with red ribbon.
For a nutty addition, add toasted pecans, cashews or peanuts.
